Hi there! I'm Katie, and these are my photos from both horse shows and lessons. I go to schooling shows, combined tests, and events. In the next year, I hope to start competing in eq, medals, and hunters. I own an Irish Draught named WallE, and I do a bit of everything with him. My photos are from here, there, and everywhere. Enjoy!

look at that smile…even after all the shenanigans her horse pulled, she was still happy!

I am not impressed by anyone who can yank the shit out of their horse’s mouth with a smile on their face

I am in no way trying to be rude but you don’t necessarily know what’s going on. My horse is perfectly happy and has nothing physically wrong with him but will occasionally throw a small buck or cow kick like in this picture either because he is still young and is excited or proud of himself for something or just because people let him get away with it when he was younger and they would put him up when he did it. I just personally don’t see an unhappy horse in this picture. He doesn’t look freaked out or mad. He just looks like he has a lot of energy and this is how he’s getting rid of it. I don’t see a problem with you reposting photos like these but I don’t think you should be bashing the horse, rider, or the way they are training the horse. You don’t know exactly what’s going on. Just my opinion. I’m really not looking for a fight.

It’s true that I can’t say 100% from this pic what’s going on, and it could have captured an unflattering moment, in which case I take back any nasty things I say. Here are my issues:
-the girl pulling on her horse’s mouth, apparently to stop him bucking, or to punish him, or both.
-the comment suggesting that her horse repeatedly had ‘shenanigans’ during her ride.
If a horse is having shenanigans, or throwing a fit, or whatever you want to call it, I think that’s indicative of serious training issues that need to be addressed. You can’t just patch it up by punishing the horse during the ride. Either the horse needs to go back a hundred steps (because ‘don’t buck under saddle’ is the most BASIC aspect of breaking a horse to ride), or the horse is extremely unhappy and something needs to be addressed. It could be the tack, it could be the riding, it could be a health issue, but whatever it is, it’s not fair to ride a horse that’s throwing a bucking fit and it’s not impressive, either. If you want to gain points from riding a bronc then go to a rodeo.
I don’t have a problem with the occasional excited crowhop, or a horse that spooks and rears at something. That’s fine. Your horse sounds okay to me. What I have a problem with is people acting like a massive bucking fit is hilarious, or the horse’s fault, or something to be proud of riding through. It’s not. It’s dangerous and it’s unprofessional and it’s not fair to the horse.
I’m not looking for a fight either lol. And I am gonna dial back some of my judgment, partially because people are pissed, and partially because it’s super hard to diagnose training and riding issues over the internet, especially from a single picture.

Alright guys, sorry for reblogging my own photo, but I feel like this needs to be said. This horse is very young, and had just put in an amazing round. He leaped up and kicked out because he was happy, not because he was scared, pissed, or hurting. Also, although it doesn’t look like it in the photo, he launched his rider FAR and her first reaction was to get her contact with his reins back. She’s not “yanking the shit” out of his mouth, she was surprised that her horse did this.

Please try to figure out what was going on in the photo before jumping to conclusions.
